Bone graft augmentation at the oral surgery specialists in Munich – helping your teeth and implants stay strong

The key things to know about bone graft augmentation

What is bone graft augmentation?

In addition to healthy teeth or high-quality dentures, having a fully functional set of teeth also includes the jawbones. If there is a loss of jawbone due to trauma or tooth loss, bone reconstruction may be necessary to maintain a good implant site or to ensure an attractive gum line. There are several ways of reconstructing the bone and our practice offers you various reconstruction methods as well as bone replacement materials. We always prefer bone grafted using the Khoury method and we would be happy to explain all the options and alternatives to you in our oral surgery department in Munich.

What are the different options for bone replacement materials?

In principle, bone replacement materials can be divided into four categories. Firstly, we make the distinction between whether the bone material comes from the patient’s own body, another human body, an animal’s body (material from cattle is usually used for this) or whether it was manufactured synthetically. We only use materials that have been tested in independent studies over the long term and found to perform very well. You will find out in advance exactly which manufacturers and methods we recommend. When it comes to surgical materials in particular, we only use products that we would use ourselves.

What are the benefits of bone graft augmentation?

Modern dentistry has come a long way. Nonetheless, where possible, using the body’s own bone material is preferable to the alternatives, due to better tolerability, a significantly lower risk of an immune response, a short healing time and high reliability. Bone graft augmentation gives you the best chance of complication-free growth of the transplanted bone material and optimal stimulation of the surrounding bone growth, despite the operation to remove part of your bone.

Autologous Bone Augmentation Munich

Autologous Bone Augmentation Munich

Our oral surgeons at Dr. Butz & Partner Munich want to guarantee you the best possible dental health. Because of this, we are happy that thanks to modern dentistry, healthy and beautiful teeth are increasingly becoming the norm even in old age. However, a fully functional dentition involves more than just healthy teeth or high-quality dentures. The jawbone has to be in good shape as well, as one requires the other: If a tooth is lost and not replaced by an implant, the jawbone beneath the gap is no longer naturally loaded and consequently recedes. In turn, if there is no jawbone in good condition and with ample bone mass, neither teeth nor implants can be sufficiently supported. Therefore, if jawbone material is lost, it has to be rebuilt to ensure optimal dental health.

Luckily, today there are more possibilities of bone augmentation than ever before. Of course, our oral surgery clinic Dr. Butz & Partner in Fünf Höfe Munich can provide you the latest state of the art, with a wide variety of different methods and kinds of bone replacement material.

However, despite the great advances of modern dentistry, autologous material from the patient’s own body is still preferable over even the most modern alternatives. Both in terms of quantity and quality, autologous bone material is generally the most reliable option.

Other bone substitutes vs. autologous bone augmentation Munich

The extensive range of bone replacement materials can be divided into four categories, all of which are available at our oral surgery clinic in Munich:

Autologous material is bone material from the patient’s own body, which is used for formation of additional bone material. As the amount of material needed for the jaw is comparatively little, it is dispensable in the donor region, which can be the chin or the pelvis, among others.

Allogeneic material is bone material from another individual of the same species. It is usually obtained from bone banks.

Xenogeneic material is replacement material obtained from bones of other species. In most cases, material from bovine species or corals with bone structures similar to that of humans is used. In an elaborate process, any organic material is removed and the bone structure is brought even closer to that of human bone. In this state, it can be used for an implantation.

Alloplastic material is an umbrella term for a range of different synthetic replacement materials.

At Dr. Butz & Partner in Munich, we only use the highest quality materials from each of these categories. Therefore, all of these possibilities can be considered valuable alternatives with a high chance of a good course of treatment. Still, it should be noted that autologous bone augmentation yields certain benefits compared to the other options. This holds true even though the procedure involves one additional step since the bone augmentation material first has to be taken from the patient’s body. Material from one’s own body generally has the highest compatibility with it. There is no risk of an immune reaction against the replacement material, and the required healing period is shorter. This ensures the best chances of a smooth growth of the transplanted bone material into the bone and optimal growth of surrounding bone tissue, making sure that you will soon have a solid basis for an implant.
